What was your first job out of school?

I was an intern at a small architectural firm then quickly moved to an office furniture dealership who also offered interior design services. It gave me an understanding and the experience in space planning to begin to understand why spaces not only could look great, they needed to function too. Funny fact, I ended up meeting my husband while working here. He worked for a furniture manufacturer in Toronto and was my account manager!

What brought you to Fit + Finish Design?

My career thus far has primarily been at architectural firms where I’ve designed, directed, and project managed numerous types of commercial projects. With 20 plus years under my belt, I was ready for a new challenge by working on luxury residential projects to forming a brand new interior design firm in our area.

What’s the most important lesson you’ve learned in school and still employ today?

I remember back in design school, I had a teacher who told us that we had to work with contractors and never think you were better than them. Her words always resonated with me; however, I don’t know that I fully grasped the meaning until I began my career. You have to work as a team to ensure we can solve issues during construction together. I’ve established some great relationships over the years, and the projects inevitably turn out better when we work as a team, not against each other.

What is most important to you as an interior designer?

I’m very passionate about educating my clients and the general public on the importance of being a licensed interior designer and what that means. I’ve been called a decorator more times than I can count. I earned the NCIDQ Certification (National Council for Interior Design Qualification Certification) and am licensed in the state of Maryland. Being educated about building codes, life safety, and general constructability of interior environments is a differentiating factor between a decorator and a licensed interior designer.

What is something most people don’t know about you?

I’m an identical twin who I talk to at least once a day!

What is your hidden talent?

Singing! Just kidding. I guess my hidden talent would be photography. I had worked on a music room for a client once where I took photographs of their family playing music together, which created a beautiful backdrop as wall art and gave them memories they will have forever.

What is your favorite color?

Blue. It’s such a universal & timeless color!

Where do you see Fit + Finish Design in five years?

We recently moved to a larger office location to allow for growth in staff and awareness to our community. Over the last two years, we went from working at home to a small 300 square foot office to now a 1,000 square foot office! We just hired a junior designer who I am extremely excited to have joined in building a team. In five years, I’d like to have additional designers on our team and continuing to touch our clients’ lives by improving their interior environments.
