Behind the Design: Inside the Creative Process with Kim Boomer of Fit + Finish Design

Kim Boomer, Principal of Fit+ Finish Design

Kim Boomer, the Principal of Fit + Finish Design, brings over 25 years of experience to her craft, with a unique perspective shaped by her deep-rooted background in both commercial and residential design. Throughout her career, Kim has honed her ability to merge architectural details with functional, timeless spaces.

In this Q&A, we explore the evolution of her design philosophy, her signature style, and the challenges she’s overcome along the way.

Evolving Views on Architecture and Design

Kim’s design journey began in the commercial sector, where she spent the first 20 years of her career. “I always thought residential design wasn’t for me,” she reflects. “Commercial projects are more architecturally focused, and I loved that challenge.”

However, her perspective shifted as Fit + Finish Design began working on residential projects. “It opened my eyes to new opportunities,” she says. “I realized I could bring architecturally focused design into homes, creating functional and truly unique spaces. My signature lies in designing custom cabinetry and other built-in elements that transform spaces into something special.”

A Thoughtful Approach to Commercial Interior Design

When Kim approaches commercial projects, functionality takes the lead. “We start by understanding the program of a business,” she explains. “With a corporate office, for example, we discuss how many offices, workstations, and print stations are needed, as well as the required adjacencies between them.” From there, her team crafts a space plan that balances the practical needs of the workplace with aesthetic appeal and budget considerations.

Fit + Finish Design’s Signature Style

For Kim, the architecture of a space is where her designs truly shine. “Our signature is in the built environment,” she says. “We make a statement with custom cabinetry and architectural elements. The furnishings we add are just layers on top, complementing the overall design.” This emphasis on the structural components of space ensures that each project has a unique and personalized touch, a hallmark of Fit + Finish Design’s approach.

Challenges & Triumphs in Interior Design

One of the biggest challenges Kim has faced in her career is breaking through public misconceptions about interior design. “Many people still think interior design is just about picking colors, but it’s so much more than that,” she says. “It’s about understanding how people use a space, how to make it functional, and how to elevate it aesthetically. It’s a complex process, and every decision has an impact.”

When asked to highlight her proudest projects, Kim finds it hard to single out just one. “Every project comes with its own set of challenges,” she says. “But seeing them through to completion is always a fulfilling experience. I can’t pick just one or two—I’m proud of every project we’ve worked on at Fit + Finish.”

What’s Next for Fit + Finish Design?

Looking to the future, Kim is passionate about continuing to advocate for the value of licensed interior designers. “I want to keep educating people on what we do and why it matters,” she says. “And, of course, we want to keep growing the firm with both residential and commercial projects.”

Kim’s thoughtful and methodical approach to design, combined with her advocacy for the profession, continues to shape the path forward for Fit + Finish Design. As the firm expands, Kim remains dedicated to creating spaces that not only look beautiful but function seamlessly—whether in homes or businesses.
